Some folks have been wondering if and when UFC 213 would receive some additional star power, and recently the promotion confirmed that three former champs will be competing at the event.
UFC 213 will go down on July 8th in Las Vegas, Nevada, during the company’s International Fight Week. Now, it’s been announced that the card will feature Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio Werdum, Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis vs. Jim Miller.
The scrap between Overeem (42-15) and the former heavyweight champ Werdum (21-6-1) will be a rubber match. When they battled for the first time in 2006, for PRIDE, Werdum won the fight via second round, submission. But, in their 2011 rematch with Stikeforce, Overeem took the fight via unanimous decision.
Werdum will be fighting for the first time since September, when he scored a UD win over Travis Browne. Overeem, on the other hand, KO’d Mark Hunt in his last outing, which took place in March.
The UFC planned to have Lawler (27-11) fight Cerrone (32-8) last November at the promotion’s Madison Square Garden debut. But, Lawler decided to take a break from competing, after losing the 170 title to Tyron Woodley via knockout in July.
Cerrone was also stopped in his last fight, as Jorge Masvidal finished him in the second round this past January.
Pettis (19-6) has decided to return to 155, where he was once the champ. More recently, the dynamic striker was stopped by featherweights Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira.
The veteran Miller (28-9) is coming off a memorable, decision loss to Dustin Poirier in February, which snapped his three fight winning streak.
So, these three match-ups have certainly bolstered the line-up for UFC 213, which will also feature bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt throwing down with his rival, and former champ, TJ Dillashaw.
