Since Manuwa took out Corey Anderson in March, “Poster Boy” has been campaigning hard for a shot at the crown. The knockout victory over Anderson followed Manuwa’s KO win over Ovince Saint Preux, which took place in October.
Well, recently Teixeira spoke with MMA Fighting, in advance of his May 28th bout with fellow top contender, Alexander Gustafsson. When asked to comment on Manuwa’s title shot campaign, the Brazilian star had this to say:
“Jimi Manuwa isn’t qualified to fight for the belt,” Teixeira said. “He didn’t beat any top fighter yet.”
“I think Jimi Manuwa has to beat a top fighter first before thinking about fighting for the belt, or maybe two or three top guys,” Teixeira added. “Jimi Manuwa is down there, in my opinion.”
Now, Teixeira isn’t the only person who’s questioned whether Manua has done enough yet to fight for a belt. Although the heavy handed fighter’s gone 6-2 in the UFC to date, Manuwa was stopped by Anthony Johnson in 2015 and Gustafsson in 2014. Further, he currently holds no wins over top five ranked opponents, although, Anderson is currently ranked #6.
But, since Teixeira is about to fight Gustafsson, if Jon Jones decides he needs more time before he faces the champ Daniel Cormier, there really is no one else but Manuwa who makes sense.
Gustafsson – Teixeira will headline UFC FN 109, which will go down in Stockholm, Sweden.
