Tony Ferguson has been driving hard for a bout with Nate Diaz, and now the lightweight contender’s manager is getting in on the action.
Ever since Khabib Nurmagomedov had to withdraw from UFC 209 due to medical issues, Ferguson has made it abundantly clear he wants to fight Diaz. Nurmagomedov has said that he’ll be ready to fight in September, but since Ferguson hasn’t fought yet this year, he wants to get back in the cage sooner than later. Further, a fight with Diaz would likely send “El Cucuy” a nice paycheck as well.
So far, however, there’s been no indication that Diaz is interested in fighting Ferguson. The Stockton star has said several times that he’s only down a for a big, big fight, and it would seem he doesn’t think Ferguson provides this.
“The Nate Diaz fight interests him,” Attar said, while referring to Ferguson. “If you want Conor to be excited about you, you better go in there and fight if you want to fight him in the future. If this thing happens with Floyd, you got to get Conor excited to get back in there with you. So I think from an opportunity standpoint, Nate would be foolish not to consider taking Tony on for the interim title fight.”
Now, in theory, this sounds great. If Diaz did take the interim belt, then sure, McGregor would have even more incentive to take a rubber fight with him. But, chances are Diaz doesn’t believe he should have to fight Ferguson, to get to McGregor. If the UFC offered Diaz more guaranteed cash to fight Ferguson, then maybe he’d be more inclined to take the bout…
