If you thought Al Iaquinta might walk back some of the things he said this past weekend, after bombing out Diego Sanchez, well, you were way off base.
Iaquinta has let it be known in preceding months that he doesn’t think he, or many other fighters, get paid enough. Following his emphatic win over Sanchez at UFC FN 108, he repeated that sentiment. So much so, the powerful lightweight said he’s not sure if he’ll compete again.
Well, Iaquinta was a guest on today’s “MMA Hour”, and the 29 year-old made it clear he hasn’t changed his mind on this issue in the last couple of days. In fact, Iaquinta also fired away at UFC President Dana White during the interview. Here’s some of what Iaquinta had to say (quote via MMA Fighting):
“Is that crazy? I’m a professional freakin’ athlete who just was on TV, FOX Sports 1 co-main event, and $50,000 is what I walk away with? Are you kidding me?”
“Dana White has done a lot for this sport, but he’s not gotten one injury from this sport. And for him to say, ‘the best part of UFC Brooklyn was the flight home’ — you’re on a private jet, bro. Shut the f*ck up. You’re on a private jet. Most people, that would be the highlight of their life. Forget the night. You’re on a private jet, of course it’s the highlight of your night. Two guys are fighting in a cage, getting hurt. Jim Miller probably couldn’t [walk]. Who was the leg kicks, someone was getting their f*cking leg kicked in? [White] owes an apology to all those motherf*ckers. That’s some bullsh*t. Shut your f*cking mouth.”
Ya. This is going to get really interesting. Will White let these comments fly by? And sit down with Iaquinta to talk it out? Or could this spell the end of Iaquinta’s UFC run? The latter’s currently riding a five fight winning streak, but Iaquinta also said he has two fights left on his current UFC deal.
Whether you agree with Iaquinta or not, there’s no question that more and more fighters are speaking about the issue of fighter pay.
