It’s been a little while now since the UFC announced that Georges St-Pierre is going to be the next man to challenge Michael Bisping, but Yoel Romero isn’t letting up on his verbal attacks of the champ.
When 2017 began, the expectation was that Romero would be the next man to face Bisping. After all, the feared wrestler was coming off a highlight reel, stoppage of Chris Weidman, and Romero’s won eight straight bouts now in the UFC.
But, as you know, St-Pierre came to terms with the UFC on a new deal, and the promotion agreed to grant the star a title shot at 185. Even though the former welterweight champ hasn’t fought at that weight before in the Octagon.
Well, Romero wasn’t happy about Bisping’s decision to take that fight then, and he still isn’t now. Case in point, in a recent interview with FloCombat, here’s what Romero had to say about Bisping:
“I have learned to be patient,” Romero said through a translator. “I will only fight for a title whomever that may be. Whether interim or not, my next fight will only be for the title.
“I find it humorous the so-called champ can’t fight who and when he wants to. He speaks of a code that we are to follow. There is a code that champions fight and defend their title against the best competition. He doesn’t do that and doesn’t follow the code code. He is no champion in the eyes of the people or colleagues.”
It will be interesting to see what comes next for Romero. Will he end up waiting for the winner of Bisping – GSP? And further, will GSP even defend the 185 belt if he wins it? It’s kind of hard to see how or why an interim middleweight belt could get put up, considering Bisping – GSP is expected to take place in the not too distant future.
