If you’ve been hoping for word that Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones are going to fight again, well, it looks like your Friday’s off to a good start…
MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani is reporting that multiple sources have informed him that Cormier – Jones II is in the works for the July 29th, UFC 214 card, and that the fight is close to being signed.
Since Cormier submitted Anthony Johnson at UFC 210 on April 8th, there’s been a lot of talk and debate, as to whether the light-heavyweight champ would face Jones or Jimi Manuwa next. The latter has been campaigning hard for a title shot, and has argued Jones needs a warm-up fight, but it looks like Cormier, Jones and the UFC think otherwise.
This report also comes not long after Dana White said that if Jones was ready to fight Cormier in late July, then the title shot was his.
So, if and when the bout’s finalized, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Although Jones hasn’t fought since April, 2016, when he earned a unanimous decision win over Ovince Saint Preux, it was difficult to see him agreeing to a tune-up bout. After all, Jones defeated Cormier by UD in 2015, the latter is his biggest rival, and “DC’s” also the champ.
It will be interesting to see, however, if the bout headlines UFC 214. White has said several times now that Jones would not be booked for a main event in his next fight, as a result of his well documented issues in the last couple of years.
UFC 214 is set to go down at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
