Nothing has been signed yet, but if Jon Jones wants to fight Daniel Cormie in late July, UFC President Dana White says he can…
Jones is winding down the one year suspension he received from the fallout of his failed, UFC 200 test, and will be cleared to fight in early July. As a result, there’s been a ton of talk about whether the former champ would take on his rival and reigning champ, Mr. Cormier, next. Especially since the latter submitted Anthony Johnson for a second time at UFC 210 on April 8th.
Well, White spoke to ESPN recently, and while doing so, he had this to say about Cormier – Jones II:
“Cormier is available to fight on July 8, but that time frame doesn’t work for Jon Jones,” White said. “Cormier already told me he’s willing to fight either Jones or Manuwa.
“If Jon Jones is ready to fight [by UFC 214] on July 29, we’ll see the Jones versus Cormier rematch, finally.”
So there you have it. As this is being written, it’s kind of interesting that Jones has not mentioned anything about this on Twitter. Further, Manuwa and Cormier have been trading shots on Twitter, and “DC” tweeted “Jones needs to get his sea legs back”, before saying he’s down to fight the “Poster Boy”.
So, could it be that Jones is considering a warm-up fight first? And if so, who would he face? Or is that Jones wants to return later this year? Of course, it could also simply be he’s taking some time to confer with his team, before making a decision.
