Recently Demetrious Johnson let it be known he wasn’t happy about the fact he hasn’t received additional belts from the UFC for his title defenses, and Dana White’s going to do his best to rectify the situation…
Prior to UFC on FOX 24, Johnson called on the promotion to “give me eight damn belts please”, since he only has one. “Mighty Mouse” had seen fellow UFC champs like Michael Bisping and Daniel Cormier with more than one belt, and was wondering why he doesn’t have more. A lot more. Johnson had defended the flyweight title nine times before Saturday, and then, he submitted Wilson Reis to tie Anderson Silva’s title defense record of 10. So, as far as Johnson sees it, the UFC owes him nine belts.
Well, according to White, UFC champs apparently don’t receive a new belt for each title defense. While speaking to the UFC’s Megan Olivi after Saturday’s card, the UFC President said this (quote via MMA Junkie):
“I’m going to get him his belts,” White said. “He’s definitely keeping the belt from tonight, and I guess I’ve got some catching up to do. Listen, that’s not the way it works. People don’t win belts every time. You defend your title, and you keep your belt. If we’re handing out belts every single defense here – that’s a lot of money.
“It would be a lot of money to get him eight more belts. To be honest with you, we don’t even have eight more belts. We order them as we do events. It’s going to be a little bit of back up on his belts, but we’ll get it done.”
There you have it. Johnson’s house is about to feature a lot more gold.
