When people talk about who the greatest of all time in MMA, names like Anderson Silva, Fedor Emelianenko and Jon Jones get mentioned, but Dana White believes Demetrious Johnson‘s in the conversation as well.
If you watched UFC on FOX 24 last night, then you saw Johnson dismantle Wilson Reis with strikes, before submitting him with a third round, armbar. Not only was it another, ridiculously, impressive performance for the flyweight champ, but it marked the tenth time Johnson has defended the 125 belt. That ties the record of the aforementioned Silva.
Well, following the event, White had nothing but praise for the 30 year-old champion (quotes via MMA Fighting):
“Listen, he’s got one more fight, and if he breaks Anderson Silva’s record? Listen, he’s already the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world and he strives to be better each time, and he gets better each time, literally destroying people,” White said.
“This kid could be considered the GOAT right now. Or, to give Anderson Silva the true respect, wait until he actually breaks the record and it’s hard not to call this guy the greatest of all time.”
Now, you may not personally think that Johnson’s the G.O.A.T., but you can’t argue that he’s in the mix for that title. After all, he is the greatest flyweight we’ve ever seen and he just tied a record that some believed could stand for decades. Johnson could do that before the year is out.
Here’s hoping that Johnson starts to receive more mainstream recognition for how special a fighter he is, and that we’re witnessing combat sports history through him. Further, it would be nice to see “Mighty Mouse” collect a couple of big paydays in the not too distant future.
