Michael Bisping may be fed up with all the heat he’s been taking for fighting Georges St-Pierre next, but that isn’t stopping the middleweight’s top contenders from blasting him for it.
The Bisping – GSP bout is taking place at a time when the division has ridiculously dangerous fighters like Yoel Romero and “Jacare” Souza knocking on the title shot door. While GSP is one of the all time greats, he’s never fought at 185 in the Octagon. Thus, the promotion’s top middleweights and others have voiced their displeasure with the planned bout.
Well, Souza is set to face fellow contender Robert Whittaker tomorrow night, on the main card of UFC on FOX 24. While speaking to the media recently about his title shot run, the Brazilian star had this to say about Bisping (quote via MMA Junkie):
“I’m ready for a challenge,” Souza said. “I can’t sit in my home waiting for Bisping. He’s a disaster for the middleweight division. He’s stopped the whole middleweight division. Right now, we need fights – me, Romero, Luke and Mousasi. We need to stay in the octagon because Bisping – he doesn’t fight any tough opponents. He’s afraid. I can’t believe Michael Bisping is afraid of Luke or Romero. It’s serious. Me, Romero, Luke and Mousasi, we need fights. We need to stay in the octagon. The winner of us four should fight for the belt – the fans need a good fight. I’m here to deliver.”
Now, Bisping has repeatedly said that he’ll fight Romero, not long after he faces GSP. But, obviously, those comments don’t seem to be resonating with the likes of Souza…
Bisping aside, it’s going to be interesting to see how Souza looks against Whittaker. The latter is riding a six fight winning streak and took out Derek Brunson in his last outing. So, if Souza can score an impressive win on Saturday, his title shot claim will be that much stronger. Yes, even though he lost to Romero via split decision.
UFC on FOX 24 will take place in Kansas City, Missouri.
