Now that Daniel Cormier has defeated Anthony Johnson for a second time, the attention’s shifting to who the light-heavyweight champ will face next: Jon Jones or Jimi Manuwa?
Cormier battled Johnson in the headliner of Saturday’s UFC 210 card, and despite the fact he ate a kick to the face that likely broke his nose, “DC” submitted the vicious striker in round two. Just as Cormier did back in 2015, when he and Johnson fought for the first time.
Both Manuwa and Jones were in attendance at last night’s card in Buffalo, as a means to heighten interest in Cormier’s next title defense. Of course, since Jones holds a win over Cormier, and because he’s considered the greatest 205’er to date, “Bones” could be next for the champ. Then again, Jones is suspended until early July, so it’s not clear just yet what the UFC’s plans are. Manuwa is also waiting in the wings, and is coming off a walk off KO of Corey Anderson, so could the feared slugger be next?
Well, while discussing the possibility of fighting Manuwa, Cormier had this to say after last night’s card (quote via MMA Junkie):
“He’s a tough guy, punches hard,” Cormier said. “I like his little thing, ‘One shot, one kill.’ It sounds cool. He wears sweatsuits. A guy that wears sweatsuits is pretty cool. But Jimi Manuwa can’t give me anything, man. Dude’s done. Jimi Manuwa would be lucky to get out of 10 minutes, seven minutes. I would demoralize him.”
There you have it. And what about Jones?
“The thing about the whole Jones thing is I would always fight Jon Jones – I’ve always said that,” Cormier noted. “I’ve always been here. This whole time I’ve been here. Jon Jones is the one that hasn’t been here to fight again…”
Cormier has said he doesn’t plan to keep fighting much longer, and because he’s always wanted to avenge his defeat to Jones, one would think that bout will be next. Provided, of course, that Jones is ready to go in the not too distant future. Following Cormier’s impressive win last night, there’s likely more buzz than ever for a rematch with his rival.
