“Jacare” Souza is booked to face fellow middleweight contender Robert Whittaker next, but that isn’t stopping the renowned fighter from taking some shots at Yoel Romero and Luke Rockhold.
Souza will face Whittaker at UFC on FOX 24, which will take place next Saturday on April 15th in Kansas City. The scrap is taking place during an interesting, some would say, controversial time for the 185 division. After all, the champ Michael Bisping is set to defend the title against Georges St-Pierre, who has yet to fight at middleweight with the promotion.
Romero was pretty much set to fight Bisping, until GSP’s return was finalized. But, now that the latter is receiving a title shot, it’s not clear what’s next for the powerful wrestler. Well, recently Souza had this to say about Romero, while discussing the fact he’s facing another fighter who is ranked below him in Whittaker (quote via MMA Junkie):
“I asked for Luke (Rockhold) but, as everyone can see, he’s running. He doesn’t want to fight. I also asked for Romero; they said he was going to wait for the belt. And they gave me Robert, who is a tough up-and-comer, young, who I need to watch out for.
“I was surprised not because they gave me this opponent, who I think is tough, and it’s a fight that makes sense considering that the guys I could really fight, like Luke or Romero, wouldn’t fight me now. I was surprised with Romero, because he said he was going to wait for the belt, and as soon as my fight was scheduled, he asked for the fight with Anderson (Silva).”
Now, it is true that Romero recently called for a bout with Silva, and now that the latter’s no longer fighting Kelvin Gastelum, could that bout happen? Hard to say. Romero did earn a tightly contested, split decision victory over Souza in 2015, so perhaps his team feels they have little to gain by fighting Souza right now.
