Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson certainly don’t have one of the biggest rivalries in the game, in terms of trash talk and ill will. But as their rematch nears, it looks like some of the pre-fight talk has riled up Johnson a wee bit.
Cormier and Johnson will battle in the main event of UFC 210 this Saturday. The bout will mark the second time they’ve fought, as back in 2015, Cormier submitted “Rumble” to become the 205 champ. The two were pretty respectful to one another leading up to that bout, and the same has largely been true as the two have prepared for the rematch.
But, in recent weeks, Cormier has argued that he doesn’t need his top tier, wrestling pedigree to defeat Johnson. “DC’s” also questioned the cardio of Johnson. Well, recently Johnson spoke to FOX Sports, and while doing so, he said this about the champ:
“DC will always talk. I just found out he just talks. I kind of figured it out. He talks just to hear himself talk,” Johnson said. “I know he wants to be that guy that’s a big time promoter and all this other stuff, but I think he’s his own biggest cheerleader and his worst promoter for sure.
“People don’t believe half the [expletive] he says.”
There you have it. Johnson was also asked about Cormier’s assertion that he doesn’t need to score takedowns, in order to defend his belt. Not surprisingly, Johnson isn’t on board with that idea, and he believes Cormier will be looking to take the fight down on Saturday. He also warned Cormier that he’s going to need to perform better than he did against Anderson Silva, when they battle at UFC 210. Cormier recently opined that his fight with Silva, which he won via UD, was the “easiest” bout of his career.
It’s going to be a fascinating fight. UFC 210 will take place in Buffalo, New York.
