A matchup between top-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko and fellow contender Fabricio Werdum, in the works since December and reported as finalized yesterday, will headline a June 26 Strikeforce event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, the promotion today announced.
Co-promoted by M-1 Global, the event will air live on Showtime at 10pm ET (delayed on the west coast) and will feature up to five televised fights.
Emelianenko (32-1) defeated Brett Rogers in November in his Strikeforce debut on CBS for his 27th-straight win, while Werdum (13-4-1) has won back-to-back Strikeforce fights over Mike Kyle and Antonio Silva after being cut by the UFC in 2008.
The matchup was originally expected to headline Strikeforce’s return to CBS in April, but negotiations between the promotions to revise their co-promotion deal dragged on and the bout was ultimately postponed.
Tickets for the event will go on sale to “Strikeforce Insider” subscribers beginning at 10am PT this Monday, May 10, before going on sale to the general public at 10am on Friday, May 14.
