We haven’t seen or heard much from Khabib Nurmagomedov since his disastrous withdrawal from UFC 209. But, recently the lightweight contender was on hand for the opening of “Eagles MMA” in Moscow, and Nurmagomedov opened up about what went down.
The vaunted grappler was supposed to fight Tony Ferguson for the interim lightweight title at the March 4th card, but Nurmagomedov was hospitalized after his weight cut went terribly wrong. It marked the third time that a bout between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson has been cancelled.
Not long after, Nurmagomedov posted a statement reporting that he was doing better etc, but it’s been unclear as to when “The Eagle” will fight again. Well, at the aforementioned gym opening, RT Sports spoke with Nurmagomedov, and he had this to say about UFC 209 and his return (quote via MMA Mania):
“You know I don’t remember a lot of things, to be honest. Last night (before weigh in) and I know – I am going to a hospital, I feel bad. I know that a lot of fans are upset with me about this and I agree with this guys. Because this is one of the biggest fights in Russian MMA. for me, I can make history but I am going to the hospital you know,”
“Everybody can die, everybody can (get) sick. Now I need a couple of months. Like two or three months. After three months I come for hard training and I want to fight in September.”
Khabib was also asked about what he thinks about the possibility of Ferguson fighting this summer, before Nurmagomedov’s ready to compete. The undefeated fighter said he isn’t thinking about that, and is focused on staying “healthy”.
So, it will be interesting to see what goes down here. Does Ferguson want to wait that long for his first fight of 2017? Does the UFC want to wait for Ferguson – Nurmagomedov?
