If you’ve been a fan of MMA for a little while now, then you know Gustafsson gave Jones a serious run for his money back in 2013, when the latter was the reigning king at light-heavyweight. The UFC has tried to book a rematch in the past, but unfortunately, the bout never materialized.
Well, fast forward to today, and Jones is no longer the champ, and Gustafsson is set to fight fellow top contender, Glover Teixeira, May 28th. Recently the UFC held a press conference to promote the upcoming Stockholm event, and Gustafsson was asked what he would choose: a rematch with Jones, or another shot at the UFC 205 crown (quote via MMA Junkie):
“Jones is one of those fights I think everybody wants,” Gustafsson said. “It’s a hard choice because you have the belt, and you have Jones. Jones is a true champ in my eyes (because he never lost the belt in the octagon). There’s no one like him, and to beat him would be as big as being the world champ.”
Hard to argue with Gustafsson here. After all, the only defeat Jones has on his record was via disqualification, and although he’s fought just once since 2015, many believe he’s still the planet’s best fighter.
Now, one would think the chances of Gustafsson being offered the choice outlined above, however, are pretty slim. Since Jones never actually lost the belt, he’ll likely face the winner of the April 8th bout between Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson when he returns.
