After Romero took out Chris Weidman last November, the expectation was that he’d be next to face the middleweight champ Bisping. But, then the UFC finalized a new deal with GSP, and proceeded to announce the former welterweight champ would take on Bisping next. The move didn’t sit well with a lot of purists, hardcore fans and Romero boosters, since GSP hasn’t fought in over three years. It also led to accusations from some, that Bisping is avoiding Romero.
Well, Dana White has said he’s hoping to book Bisping – GSP for International Fight Week in early July. On the latest episode of Bisping’s Believe You Me podcast, the champ said he had heard GSP is pushing for the fight to go down later this year, after summer.
Then, the outspoken, British star added (quote via MMA Fighting):
“If he’s not ready then I guess Yoel Romero gets his title shot. Listen, I’m not afraid of Yoel Romero. If GSP wants to fight, of course, there’s a great story there. . . But, I’m not willing to sit around and he doesn’t get to call the shots. It’s my belt and I’m not some little a**hole waiting in the wings for my title shot. I’ve got the belt and I want to fight. I’m in my prime. I don’t want to sit around for a year. If we don’t fight until September or October, that would be a year and I’m not willing to wait a year for Georges St-Pierre.
“He doesn’t get to call the shots. And I’m not being a baby about it, if he needs a little extra time, we’ll do that. But you can’t keep me waiting around indefinitely.”
There you have it. Now chances are the UFC probably won’t reverse course here, even if GSP insists he wants to wait until September. But then again, maybe they will, if they’ve been counting on a middleweight title fight to be part of International Fight Week.
