Aldo’s first reign as the UFC’s 145 champ came to a crashing halt back in 2015, when Conor McGregor quickly KO’d him at UFC 194. But, when McGregor opted to make a run at 155, the UFC had Aldo fight Frankie Edgar for an interim FW title. Aldo won that, and then after McGregor ‘relinquished’ the 145 belt, the UFC announced that the Brazilian was once again, the champ…(while then having Max Holloway fight Anthony Pettis for an interim belt, if you’re still following all this).
Well, fast forward to now, and Aldo will fight the interim champ Holloway on June 3rd. Lobov was a guest recently on Submission Radio, and “The Russian Hammer” had this to say about Mr. Aldo (quote via Bloody Elbow):
“I’ll tell you one thing about Jose Aldo, if I was in his position I would have never accepted that belt,” Lobov said. “What? So they took the belt from the guy that knocked him out in 13 seconds…
“Like, what kind of pussy do you have to be to take that? No way in hell would I ever accept that belt. I would say, ‘give me that guy again. I want to fight him, and if he’s not in the division anymore, well then f—k that, I don’t want that belt. Let the other two fight for the belt and then I’ll fight the winner and I’ll earn that belt’. Because now he’s holding a belt that Conor got off him in 13 seconds and he’ll never be able to get rid of that stain.”
Now, Aldo boosters would likely point out that the highly regarded fighter campaigned hard for a rematch with McGregor. So, it’s not like he didn’t try to avenge his disastrous defeat. Further, by being the world champ, he’s likely making much more money in sponsorships etc (although, sure, he could have publicly denounced the UFC’s decision).
Aldo’s titles aside, Lobov is getting prepared to face top featherweight contender, Cub Swanson on April 22nd.
