The anticipated rematch between welterweight contenders Thiago Alves and Jon Fitch has been postponed yet again, as UFC President Dana White today confirmed to MMA Fighting that the bout is now scheduled for UFC 117 on August 7 in Oakland, California.
In their first meeting in June 2006, Fitch scored a second-round TKO of then fellow up-and-comer Alves at UFC Fight Night 5, with both fighters subsequently making unsuccessful challenges for the welterweight title following extended win streaks.
The pair were first booked to rematch at December’s UFC 107 before a knee injury forced Alves to withdraw from the bout. Alves and Fitch were again matched up at UFC 111 in March, but Alves was again scratched from the fight and had to undergo minor surgery for a brain irregularity.
The rematch was booked again for June’s UFC 115 in Vancouver, but White said today that the promotion wants to ensure Alves is “1000 percent healthy” before facing Fitch again.
Fitch (22-3) has earned four-straight unanimous decisions since falling to welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre in 2008, most-recently topping Ben Saunders in March, while Alves (16-6) won seven-straight before dropping a unanimous decision to St-Pierre last July.
