After Manuwa scored a walk off, KO over Corey Anderson at UFC Fight Night 107 on Saturday, the light-heavyweight contender was asked if he’d be interested in fighting Jones. The reason being that the champ Daniel Cormier is set to fight Anthony Johnson next month on April 8th, so, a title shot eliminator between Jones and Manuwa is something a lot of folks would like to see.
Manuwa, however, said that he’s focused on facing the winner of Cormier – Johnson, and that fighting Jones didn’t interest him, as a result of the latter’s PED suspension. So, apparently some people viewed this as Manuwa ducking Jones, and they told the British fighter as much on social media.
Thus, Manuwa had this to say, in a recent appearance on “The MMA Hour” (quote via MMA Fighting):
“[A fight with Jones doesn’t make] the most sense, because I’m more focused on the title,” Manuwa said. “But the Jon Jones fight would be an amazing fight. He’s probably the best fighter that’s ever stepped into the Octagon. So why not? I’ve always said, why wouldn’t I want to fight him?
“…Yeah, yeah, yeah, some of his fans saying he’d crush me and I’m scared to fight him and all this shit, but these are just Twitter maniacs. I know I’m not scared. Come on, I took a fight with ‘Rumble’ Johnson with four-and-a-half weeks’ notice. Why would I be scared to fight Jon Jones? I fear no man…”
Obviously, if Manuwa could lock up a title shot next, rather than face Jones, he would do that. But, it would be kind of surprising if that’s the direction the UFC goes. If Jones isn’t granted an immediate shot at the belt, after his suspension ends in July, then the UFC could very well want him to fight Manuwa.
