Barring the very, unlikely event that the UFC creates a ‘legends’ division, Vitor Belfort say he’s going to throw down one more time in the Octagon. So, who could “The Phenom” face in his final bout?
Following Belfort’s first round, stoppage loss at the hands of Kelvin Gastelum last weekend, the Brazilian star said he wants to fight out his current UFC contract, which has one bout remaining. After that, the 39 year-old’s 20 year long career will come to an end (Belfort did say he would continue to fight if a ‘legends’ league was started, but the chances of the UFC doing that are ridiculously slim).
Well, since then, Belfort spoke with AG Fight, and the veteran fighter said he hopes his last bout will take place at 205 pounds, since he’s tired of having to make 185. While discussing a possible opponent, however, Belfort said this:
“It would have to be an interesting fighter, but not a top fighter”, Belfort said. “I’ve been fighting good guys before: Dan Henderson, [Chris] Weidman, Dan Henderson, ‘Jacaré’ [Souza], [Gegard] Mousasi and now Kelvin [Gastelum]. These are all hard fights, so if you can book a smoother fight… What’s the name of that guy from WWE? CM Punk would be a good fight. “CM Punk, let’s get it on. That would be a really good fight.”
Now, before you let out a mighty scoff, it should be noted that the story says Belfort mentioned Punk, while laughing. So, while maybe there’s a part of him that wishes he could fight Punk, we all know the chances of that happening are zero to none…No athletic commission would (should) sanction a fight between a guy who has nearly 40 pro bouts on his resume, and who is a former UFC champ, against someone who is 0-1 in MMA and has been training for a couple of years.
