Recently Tony Ferguson called for a bout with Nate Diaz, and while plenty of folks are likely on board with that idea, Michael Chiesa isn’t one of them.
Following Khabib Nurmagomedov’s disastrous withdrawal from a scheduled fight with Ferguson at UFC 209, it remains unclear, as to what’s next for “El Cucuy”. Nurmagomedov has reported that he’s healthy, so, there’s been talk the UFC might look to rebook the bout, but so far, that hasn’t happened.
Ferguson was on the latest “MMA Hour”, and he relayed that he doesn’t think Nurmagomedov is going to be ready to fight soon. As a result, Ferguson called for a fight with Stockton star, Nate Diaz. He also, reportedly, shot down the idea of fighting Chiesa, who Ferguson was scheduled to fight last year, but “Maverick” withdrew with a back injury. According to Ferguson, a fight with Chiesa doesn’t make sense, since he has little to gain by facing the lower ranked fighter.
Well, all this was relayed to Chiesa, and he had this to say about Ferugson’s Diaz proposal (quote via MMA Mania):
“I had a ruptured disk, I wasn’t sick in the hospital with the flu, or whatever the hell he had. I had a disk bulging out of my spine, there is a real big difference, man. If he doesn’t want none, then whatever. What’s with these guys that are ranked higher than me asking for guys that are ranked lower than me? It doesn’t make any sense.”
“Look, Nate is a money fight at this point. He’s a money fighter, he’s a PPV draw,” he added. “Look, Tony, you are not a PPV draw, you’re not going to get a fight with Nate, let’s run it back. I am not speaking illogically. All these matchups I ask for, they make sense. I ruptured a disk, I rehabbed, and now I’m back.”
You can understand Chiesa’s frustration here. He was scheduled to fight Ferguson before, and obviously a win over him would leave Chiesa knocking on the door for a title shot. But, all things considered, chances are Chiesa isn’t going to get his wish here.
