With Khabib Nurmagomedov’s short term future up in the air, Tony Ferguson is calling for a bout with one of the UFC’s biggest names, Nate Diaz.
Since Nurmagomedov was forced to drop out of a March 4th scrap with Ferguson, due to medical issues he incurred while trying to cut weight, we haven’t heard much in terms of a timeline for his return. Nurmagomedov reported that he’s “fine”, and so has Luke Rockhold, but on the latest “MMA Hour”, Ferugson said he thinks “The Eagle” isn’t “doing too good”.
As a result, Ferguson brought up Mr. Diaz, as a possible opponent for his next bout (quote via MMA Fighting):
“I’m just throwing a name out there, but I think Nate Diaz and myself could actually put on a good show,” said Ferguson. “I think his ranking is kind of bulls–t too, but I don’t really see anybody else. I mean, Edson Barboza called me out, but it is what it is. Everything’s in the air right now. I want to fight for the title. I want a fair fight…
“Just because he’s a decent striker, I mean, I haven’t had a knockout in a long time,” Ferguson added. “Not trying to call out my shot for a knockout, but I think my boxing’s a little bit better than his. It is what it is, I think my stand-up is a lot better, but this is not a boxing match, it’s MMA…”
Now, that’s a fight a lot of people would like to see. Would Diaz? Possibly. The Stockton star has repeatedly said he’s only interested in big fights, and while a bout with Ferguson might not deliver a massive payday, it would give Diaz an opportunity to score a pivotal victory.
There’s other questions to consider as well: would Diaz want that fight at 155? And would the UFC be on board? Or is Khabib in fact ready to return sooner than later?
