Heavyweight Josh Barnett is expected to fight Geronimo “Mondragon” dos Santos in Australia at a July 10 Impact MMA event, not a Strikeforce card as originally reported, according to Tatame.
“He is experienced and very good on the ground. I’ll try to keep this fight standing. I’ll go for the knockout, I’m going to win this fight,” “Mondragon” told Tatame, adding that he’ll sign with Strikeforce should he win the bout.
Barnett (25-5) had been sidelined since testing positive for steroids last July ahead of an Affliction matchup with Fedor Emelianenko, but returned to MMA last month with a first-round submission of Siala “Mighty Mo” Siligla at DREAM 13 in Japan, his fifth-straight win.
“Mondragon” (17-8) had won eight-straight, including a first-round TKO of former UFC fighter Assuerio Silva, before submitting to an abdominal injury in a February matchup in Brazil’s Jungle Fight promotion.
