Since Khabib Nurmagomedov was forced to drop out of his highly anticipated, UFC 209 bout with Tony Ferguson, there’s been talk that the lightweight contender could be sidelined for a while. But, according to his teammte, Luke Rockhold, “The Eagle” should be ready to battle Ferguson right around the corner.
Nurmagomedov was supposed to face Ferguson last weekend for the interim lightweight title. On the day before the weigh-ins, however, the feared grappler ran into medical issues while cutting weight. Then, on the morning of the weigh-ins, it was announced that Nurmagomedov was not going to be able to compete.
Following the devastating news, UFC boss man Dana White speculated that Nurmagomedov was going to need some time to recover from the setback. But, on a recent episode of Submission Radio, Rockhold said this about his teammate(quote via MMA Mania):
“I don’t think it should take much time. I think he’s hungry, I think he’s ready,” said Rockhold. “What other choice do you have? Khabib is undefeated, he’s beaten everybody, he’s done more than anybody. You can’t take that fight away, you can’t take the title away. It just needs to be re-booked. I think it should be re-booked as soon as possible”
There you have it. This is also in keeping with recent comments from Nurmagomedov, as he relayed that his “health is fine now”.
The big question is, however, whether the UFC wants to run the risk of booking Ferguson – Nurmagomedov right away, and have something similar unfold. The two have been booked to fight three times now, and each time, the fight fell through.
