The MMA world is buzzing about the fact that Georges St-Pierre will take on Michael Bisping in his long awaited return, but was a rumored fight with Conor McGregor in the running ? Based off what Dana White’s reporting, no it wasn’t.
For sometime now, fans and observers have speculated and debated about who GSP would fight in his comeback bout. Since St-Pierre expressed an interest in facing Michael Bisping, that bout was always in the conversation. Then, there was also talk about GSP fighting for the welterweight title. Since McGregor is such a massive star, of course, there was also buzz about GSP fighting the lightweight champ.
Well, after White announced GSP will take on Bisping next on SportsCenter, he was asked about the McGregor bout. The UFC President said this (quote via MMA Junkie):
“(We were) not even close (to making a fight between McGregor and St-Pierre),” White said. “Georges said he could make 155 pounds. But let’s be honest here – everyone wants to take a shot at Michael Bisping. They think he’s beatable, and obviously Georges St-Pierre is no different. So he’s going to step up and try to take his 185-pound title.”
This shouldn’t come as a big surprise. It’s not clear right now when McGregor will fight next, and the latter has said he wants to box Floyd Mayweather. Plus, although GSP has reportedly said he can make 155, one can understand why he’d rather compete at 185 rather than make that drop. Yes, even if he’s outsized by Mr. Bisping.
St-Pierre and Bisping are expected to fight in the second half of this year, on a date yet to be determined.
