Jorge Masvidal has been calling for a bout with a top ranked welterweight next, but the outspoken fighter would jump at the opportunity to face the currently unranked, Nick Diaz.
Masvidal is coming off a one sided, stoppage win over Donald Cerrone last month, which pushed “Gamebred” into the #6 ranking at 170. Since then, Masvidal’s made it clear he wants another big fight next, and he’s been calling out Neil Magny.
“Nick’s a different case, obviously,” said Masvidal. “He’s super famous. He’s like a fight away from fighting for the title. He might go straight to the title. So that’s a different situation. He might not have a ranking, but his name carries a lot of weight, so if they put that fight together, I’d take it in a heartbeat obviously.”
Of course, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. As Masvidal noted, Diaz is a big star, and the fight would be a nice payday for him (as Masvidal also reportedly noted that he’s “broke”). Further, the only reason Diaz isn’t ranked in the top 15 is because he hasn’t fought at 170 since 2013.
Unfortunately for Masvidal, Diaz likely wouldn’t agree to fight the rugged vet. The Stockton star has said he wants as big a fight as possible in his return, which likely means it will need to be against someone in the GSP, Anderson Silva type tier. But, does this mean Masvidal – Diaz wouldn’t be awesome? No. No it does not.
