Teixeira is coming off a decision win over Jared Cannonier, which took place at UFC 208 earlier this month. That booking surprised many throughout the MMA world when it was announced, since Teixeira is a top five ranked 205’er, and Cannonier isn’t in the top ten. Leading up to the bout, Teixeira said he had no issue with facing a rising fighter like Cannonier, who was coming off back-to-back wins.
“I did want a bigger name,” Manuwa said. “But Corey Anderson is a great fighter. I’m not looking past him”.
“I was looking forward to fighting [Glover] already, and I don’t think that he wanted to fight [me],” added Manuwa, who also reportedly claimed he signed a bout agreement to face Teixeira, but for some reason, the fight wasn’t finalized.
“He just fought the number 15 ranked guy in his last fight and he’s ranked number 3, which makes no sense to me.”
We don’t really know what happened here. Maybe Teixeira wasn’t interested in fighting in London? Where UFC FN 107 will go down? As UFC 208 took place in Brooklyn, New York, not far from where Teixeira resides in Connecticut.
Or maybe there was a breakdown in communication? Or maybe Teixeira’s team decided Cannonier was a better fight to take, considering Glover was coming off a vicious, KO win to Anthony Johnson? Hard to say. If Manuwa defeats Anderson, however, maybe a bout with Teixeira will materialize next.
