Conor McGregor hasn’t expressed much interest in fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov or Tony Ferguson next, but Dana White expects the lightweight champ’s going to do just that.
Ferguson and Nurmagomedov are going to battle for the interim 155 title next Saturday at UFC 209, March 4th. The title was created (although many have rightfully questioned if it needed to be) because McGregor’s taking some time off, in advance of the birth of his first child.
In addition, however, the combat sports world has been buzzing about the possibility of a boxing bout between McGregor and Floyd Mayweather. In fact, McGregor has said he believes his next fight will be with the boxing star, rather than Nurmagomedov or Ferguson, who he’s categorized as “bums”.
“I don’t know where we’re at, we’re nowhere,” said White. “We’re nowhere with it.”
“I expect Conor’s next fight to be in the UFC, in mixed martial arts and the winner of Khabib vs. Ferguson,”
Now, considering Mayweather publicly shot down White’s offer of $25 million, and a cut of PPV sales for the McGregor fight, there’s a chance his team continues to talk with McGregor’s camp. Meaning, maybe the UFC brass are out of the loop.
Considering what McGregor has said about Ferguson and Nurmagomedov, and how adamant he’s been about fighting Mayweather, it’s kind of hard to imagine him fighting one of the lightweights next. Guess we’ll see.
