Now that Georges St-Pierre has a new UFC deal in place, speculation and discussion as to who he’ll fight in his comeback bout has kicked into high gear. But, if his coach Firas Zahabi has his way, it will be either Michael Bisping or Conor McGregor.
Last week Dana White reported that the UFC and St-Pierre have finally, come to terms on a new contract. The Canadian star said he wouldn’t return to the cage, until he had a contract which compensated him for money he’s lost, on account of the Reebok uniform agreement.
Zahabi was a guest on the latest “MMA Hour”, and of course, the Tristar coach was asked to weigh-in on GSP’s comeback bout. Here is some of what the MMA wizard had to say (quote via MMA Fighting):
“My ideal scenario, I don’t know if it’s still up for grabs, but I was really happy when there was a buzzing of Bisping or McGregor,” Zahabi said. “I thought those two would be two epic fights. One, he would go a little lower [in weight]; one, he would go a little higher. But those are really, really intriguing fights. Of course, Tyron Woodley, he’s the [welterweight] champion and et cetera, but he has his fight with ‘Wonderboy’ [Thompson]. And if ‘Wonderboy’ wins, then they’ll have a trilogy. And of course we don’t want to fight with ‘Wonderboy,’ we go way back together.
“So I think the welterweight title is not really something he (St-Pierre) is thinking about right now because of the current landscape, but there is always the 185-pound belt. And of course, McGregor is such a mega-star that if you put those two on a main event, I don’t think that anybody in the world wouldn’t watch that…”
Now sure, Bisping – GSP or McGregor – GSP would be massive. But, it’s hard to imagine the latter fight going down anytime soon. McGregor has repeatedly said now that he wants to box Floyd Mayweather next, and it’s been reported that talks are underway in an effort to get that fight finalized.
The Bisping fight is more likely. Dana White has said that Yoel Romero is next for the middleweight champ, but he made those comments before GSP had finalized a new contract. Bisping has said, plenty of times now, that he’s interested in fighting St-Pierre, and the latter has also called for that bout.
