Germaine de Randamie is the UFC’s first ever, women’s 145 champ, but Cris “Cyborg” Justino remains more than confident that she’s the planet’s top, female featherweight.
De Randamie laid claim to the featherweight title at UFC 208, by earning a tightly contested and controversial decision over Holly Holm. That fight came together, however, after “Cyborg” turned down the opportunity to fight for the inaugural title. Justino has reported she did so, because she was still recovering from her cuts to 140 last year.
Well, following UFC 208, “Cyborg” spoke with MMA Junkie, and here is what the Invicta FC champ had to say about de Randamie:
“I feel like I’m an MMA a fighter, and she’s just a striker,” Justino said. “And we’re going to fight in MMA. I’ll be prepared for any situation. We’ll have to see if she’s prepared for any situation.”
Based off those comments, it sounds like Justino could mix in some takedown attempts, if and when she fights de Randamie. “Cyborg” hits extremely hard, but she’s also ridiculously dangerous on the ground as well.
Of course, the big question right now is when might de Randamie – Justino happen? After UFC 208, the new champ said she has injured ligaments in her hand, and plans to undergo surgery. She’s also offered Holm a rematch. Then, in addition, it’s not clear yet how “Cyborg’s” USADA flag is going to play out.
Well, while discussing her next fight, Justino said this:
“If de Randamie isn’t ready for the fight, probably I’m going to fight the No. 1 contender for the belt.”
“…The UFC has to handle it, and I just have to keep training. If she has to do surgery on her hands, for sure, the UFC is going to care about this.”
It will be interesting to see what comes next for both de Randamie, Justino and the featherweight division for that matter. Right now, it’s not clear who the newly created division’s top contenders even are.
