After taking out Tim Boestch in the opening round at UFC 208, to push his Octagon record to 7-1, “Jacare” Souza has a compelling case to fight for the 185 title. But, if that opportunity’s too far down the line, Souza would rather scrap.
The Boetsch – Souza fight happened, since the latter was looking to stay busy, after a fight with Luke Rockhold fell through in November (Rockhold was injured). So, now that Souza scored a first round, submission win over Boetsch, what’s his plan?
Well, following the event, this is what Souza had to say, while discussing his next move (quote via Bloody Elbow):
“I want to fight the champion, but if that’s going to take a while, I prefer to take another fight because I don’t want to sit around. I wasn’t born to sit around. So I’ll take another fight if it’s going to take too long to get a title shot.”
Since Dana White has said that Yoel Romero has earned a title shot, the consensus is that the champ Michael Bisping will face the powerful wrestler next. Bisping is coming off minor knee surgery, so that bout isn’t expected to happen until late spring, early summer.
But, if for some reason that fight gets postponed, or the UFC goes in another direction, Souza had this to say about fighting Romero again:
“Yes, of course that’s an option, that’s a fight I want,. I’ve never lost a rematch, and with Romero, it’s not going to be any different. I’ll prove I didn’t lose to him. I lost to the judges.”
Romero and Souza fought in December, 2015, and the latter lost the bout via split decision.
