Germaine de Randamie Says Holly Holm “Didn’t Want to Fight Me”, Apologizes For Late Shots

UFC 208

Germaine de Randamie is the UFC’s first, women’s featherweight champ, but not everyone is happy with how the decorated striker secured the title.

If you watched UFC 208, then you know that de Randamie cracked Holly Holm with a punch after the second round ended. The blow wobbled Holm, but no point was deducted. Then, after round three, de Randamie threw a couple of late shots again. Still, no point was taken away.

So, since the scores were 48-47 across the board for de Randamie, if a point had been taken, the fight would have been a draw. Further, some have questioned whether the late shot after round two, impacted Holm’s performance.

Well, following the event, de Randamie had this to say about the fouls (quote via MMA Junkie):

“It wasn’t meant for me to hit her after the bell,” de Randamie said. “It was in the heat of the moment. I apologize. I’m not like that.”

Even if the blows weren’t intentional, it was pretty surprising that de Randamie didn’t have a point deducted the second time around. This aside, de Randamie also said this, while referring to Holm’s attempts to take the fight down:

“It was a close fight,” de Randamie said. “She (hurt) me in the third round with a head kick. It was close, but I came to fight and she didn’t want to fight me. I’m a brawler. I want to fight.”

Now it remains to be seen what’s next for de Randamie. She reported after the fight that she has injured ligaments in her hand. So the champ will be sidelined for a while if she undergoes surgery.
