Officially, Holly Holm incurred her third straight defeat last night at UFC 208, but the former bantamweight champ believes she should be holding the 145 title today.
Holm threw down with Germainde de Randamie in the headliner of Saturday’s event, which was to determine the UFC’s first ever, women’s 145 title. De Randamie was awarded the bout and the belt, with scores of 48-47 from all three judges. But, the fight wasn’t without controversy, as de Randamie cracked Holm with a shot after round two ended, and fired punches at her after the next round concluded as well. The feared striker was not, however, deducted any points.
Following the event, here is some of what Holm had to say about the decision, and the fouls (quotes via MMA Junkie):
“I think it warrants a rematch,” Holm said. “When you have more than half the people saying the fight should have gone the other way, usually that warrants a rematch. So that would be awesome.”
“Well, yeah (it was intentional),” Holm stated, while discussing the punches she took after the horn. “If it’s one shot after the bell after a combo, that’s an accident. But I still think I could have won the fight on my own.”
Holm also said she believes she took three rounds, but noted she didn’t “capitalize” when de Randamie was “rocked”. Statistically, the bout was really close. According to Fight Metric, de Randamie landed 80 significant strikes to Holm’s 77, and 144 strikes overall, to Holm’s 122. It should also be noted, however, that Holm went 0-9 in the takedown department.
So, since de Randamie reported afterwards that she has a hand injury, and because Holm has lost three straight, chances are a rematch won’t happen anytime soon. If Cris “Cyborg” is eligible to fight say later this year, then she could be next for de Randamie. It remains to be seen, however, how that situation will play out.
