Anderson Silva has said he’s just fighting these days because he loves to do it, but it’s also clear that the former middleweight champ would like to hold the 185 belt once again.
Silva will take on Derek Brunson tomorrow at UFC 208, and he’ll be looking to get back on track, as the legend is coming off decision losses to Michael Bisping and Daniel Cormier. “The Spider” defeated Nick Diaz before that, but after Silva tested positive for PEDs, the bout was overturned (Silva denied knowingly taking banned substances).
Well, since Yoel Romero has been tearing through the middleweight division, Dana White has said the powerful wrestler will face the champ Bisping next. But, when asked this week if a win over Brunson could move him into a title fight, Silva said this (quote via MMA Junkie):
“One more good question, but this is for Dana,” Silva said. “In my opinion, I proved for a long time how much I give my heart in my time with the UFC. Why not give me the opportunity to fight for the belt again? I don’t know. But this is a good question for Dana, not for me.”
There’s no doubt that Silva has done a ton for the company, and since the legend has said he thinks he in fact beat Bisping last year, these comments aren’t too surprising. But, considering what Romero’s done, it’s hard to imagine Silva jumping the line. Especially since he’s only been victorious in one of his last four bouts.
UFC 208 will take place in Brooklyn, New York.
