Thousands of folks likely raised their eyebrows when they heard “Jacare” Souza was going to fight Tim Boetsch, and the latter may have been in that camp.
Boetsch and Souza are going to fight this Saturday at UFC 208 in Brooklyn. While both men have been around the MMA block and then some, since Boetsch is ranked #13 and Souza’s #3, it’s not a bout that was on anyone’s radar.
Case in point, while speaking to MMA Junkie recently, Boetsch had this to say when he was asked for his reaction, upon finding out a bout with Souza had been tabled:
“I was confused, honestly,” Boetsch said. “I didn’t know why I was getting the call.”
“Apparently, he just wanted to fight, so they found the guy that will fight him,” Boetsch added. “I know there were a lot of other phone calls made, and guys that don’t want to get in the cage with him. He’s dangerous, and I’m sure that factored into their turning the fight down.”
In fact, not long ago, Souza’s manager created a fake Craigslist ad in an effort to get his client a fight. There’s no doubt that “Jacare” is one of the best and most dangerous fighters at 185. Souza’s ground game has long been heralded, but the Brazilian has also developed a nasty striking game as well.
Of course, as men like Yushin Okami, Brad Tavares and Rafael Natal can testify to, Boetsch can crack as well. Thus, I think most people would be pretty, pretty shocked if that fight goes the distance.
