Souza is smack dab in the middle of the title shot hunt, due to the fact he’s gone 6-1 in the UFC. The Brazilian’s only loss during that time came against Romero, however, who won a tightly contested split decision in 2015.
Since Romero has gone undefeated in the Octagon, and because he took out Chris Weidman in his last outing, the powerful wrestler’s supposed to be next for the champ Michael Bisping. But, recently Souza had this to say about the situation, while speaking to the media (quote via MMA Fighting):
“This fight will happen because Bisping is afraid,” Souza said, while referring to a rematch with Romero. “Bisping is running. (The Romero) fight will happen. I believe that after my fight, Romero is next. My focus is the belt, I’d rather right Bisping next, of course, but I believe I’ll end up fighting Romero…”
“…He just wants to fight for money,” Souza adding, in referencing the fact that Bisping has called for money / big fights recently. “He doesn’t give a damn about the fans, what fans want. Fans pay this jerk’s salary, so he better respect the fans.”
Bisping has said he’d fight Romero; it’s just that the British star wants the biggest fight possible, when he returns to action. Bisping isn’t expected back until May or June, due to minor knee surgery. But, considering Dana White has said Romero will get the next title shot, it’s hard to imagine Bisping side stepping the contender.
First things first for Souza, however, and that’s Boetsch. The latter is ridiculously tough and can hit like a truck.
