Rousey was quickly taken out by Nunes at the year-end event, and since then, there’s been a ton of speculation and debate about what went wrong. Aside from questions regarding Rousey’s camp, her decision to not speak with the media leading up to the event, prompted some to wonder about her mindset. As you know, Rousey was returning to the cage for the first time since 2015, when she was viciously KO’d by Holly Holm.
Recently McGregor held a media / fan event in Manchester, and he was asked to weigh-in on Rousey’s latest defeat. While doing so, the lightweight champ made it clear that he doesn’t think Rousey’s media blackout, was connected to her performance (quote via MMA Fighting):
“Look, she came in phenomenal shape, Ronda did. I have no doubt she was backstage hungry, training,” McGregor said. “I knew by the shape of her. I knew by looking at her on the scales, she came in with everything. She got hit with a inside leg kick and a jab at the opening bell, and listen, these girls are very, very small. If things go wrong, if you get one crack, everything can just slip away.
“So she handled it her way. I don’t think the way she handled it was incorrect. She did what she had to do. She got away from the spotlight, she focused on her preparation. She got hit early and then went down. That’s it, that’s the fight game…”
We still don’t know if Rousey’s going to fight again, but recently Dana White reported that he believes “Rowdy” will likely hang up the gloves. McGregor, meanwhile, is taking a break from fighting in advance of the birth of his first child.
