Following his impressive win over Donald Cerrone, Jorge Masvidal has his sights set on the welterweight division’s top contenders, and “Gambred” claims one of them has already turned down a fight.
Masvidal faced Cerrone at UFC on FOX 23 last weekend, and he proceeded to stop the surging welterweight in the second round. Since Cerrone was ranked #5 at 170 prior to the bout, the consensus is that Masvidal will face a top ranked fighter next.
“People are already turning fights down,” Masvidal said. “Demian Maia didn’t want this. They offered him the fight, and he didn’t want it. I guess he wants to sit out. So I want to fight these top-10 dudes. Give me the toughest dudes you’ve got.”
Now, if this is accurate, it shouldn’t really come as a surprise. Maia has won six straight fights and is coming off dominant wins over contenders like Matt Brown, Gunnar Nelson, Neil Magny and most recently Carlos Condit. Currently the world class grappler is ranked #3 at 170, and Maia has made it pretty clear that he wants to fight for the title next.
So, while a fight with Masvidal is certainly one a lot of folks would like to see, it doesn’t do much for Maia. But, if the March 4th rematch between champion Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson prompts fans to call for say a third bout, or the champ gets sidelined due to injury, then maybe Maia will take a fight in the interim?
