A lot of folks believe either Khabib Nurmagomedov or Tony Ferguson will present Conor McGregor a stiff challenge for the UFC’s lightweight title, but apparently the champ thinks the contenders are “bums”…
Since McGregor is taking some time off from competition, in advance of his first child, Nurmagomedov and Ferguson are fighting for an interim 155 belt on March 4th. In Nurmagomedov, you have one of the best graplers in the galaxy, who has gone 24-0 to date. In Ferguson, you have a ridiculously dangerous fighter, both standing and on the ground, who has won nine in a row. As a result, plenty of fans and pundits think the two are legitimate threats to the reign of McGregor.
Well, the Irish star held a media / fan event this past weekend, and McGregor, not surprisingly, bashed both Ferguson and Nurmagomedov. Here is some of what the champion had to say about the contenders (quote via MMA Fighting):
“They’re sloppy, messy, chinny. It’s not pretty to look at, and it’s the same with these two clowns. Two bums fighting for an interim belt. They should be very happy that I’m chilling now, taking a break, and they have this little chance to think that they’re up there. But in reality, they’re nowhere close. They both would be knocked out stiff. Both chinny, both wild, too sloppy.”
If you’ve followed McGregor over the years, then you’re not surprised to hear him say any of this. Although, the “chinny” part in particular is probably raising eyebrows, since neither guy has been stopped by strikes to date.
McGregor also made it clear at the aforementioned event that he wants to box Floyd Mayweather next, and that he’s not interested in facing Nurmagomedov or Ferguson. So, chances are he won’t be fighting either guy anytime soon.
