Conor McGregor’s striking and booming left hand have taken out several, big name fighters to date but Tony Ferguson says he’s more than willing to throw down with the lightweight champ.
Ferguson is booked to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 209, March 4th, and since it’s for the interim lightweight title, the winner is expected to face McGregor next. As a result, Ferguson has been fielding questions about the Irish star, even though he has to get through Nurmagomedov first.
For example, recently Ferguson questioned whether McGregor will in fact defend the lightweight title next. The latter never defended the 145 belt he took from Jose Aldo in December, 2015, and recently there’s been a lot of talk about McGregor boxing Floyd Mayweather. Since then, Ferguson was a guest on “MMA Junkie Radio”, and “El Cucuy” continued to push that narrative (quote via MMA Junkie):
“Who knows if ‘McNuggets’ is going to come in there and defend his belt. That poor bastard has never defended even one belt in his entire life,” Ferguson said. “If he’s trying to box – I will go toe-to-toe with that mother(expletive), and I will knock him out. That dude is going to try to go with (Floyd) Mayweather, the Olympic boxer? It’s OK, son. It’s a completely different sport. Come back over here, 155-pound division and defend your belt if you’re really man enough.”
Ferguson certainly is no slouch on the feet, but he also has a ridiculously dangerous submission game too. So, it would be interesting to see how he’d approach the heavy handed McGregor. If and or when, the two ever cross paths…
