The consensus is that BJ Penn’s comeback bout likely won’t go too well tonight at UFC Fight Night 103, but the legendary fighter plans to shock the MMA world.
Penn will take on Yair Rodriguez in the card’s main event, and the betting lines have the latter has a sizeable favorite. The 24 year-old Rodriguez has won five straight fights since he joined the UFC, and “Pantera” has showcased some pretty dangerous skills during that run.
The 38 year-old Penn, meanwhile, hasn’t fought since 2014, when he was stopped by Frankie Edgar. In addition, the former welterweight and lightweight champ hasn’t won a fight since 2010. So, it’s for these reasons, that the “Prodigy” is a pretty big underdog.
Well, recently Penn spoke with MMA Fighting, and while doing so, the Hawaiian star said this:
“I’m a fan of everybody, I respect everyone. I’m proud of everybody who decides to take this path in life and chooses this profession. And I think he’s very good, a very solid opponent,” Penn said. “But a lot of people are going to be surprised when I get out there. It’s going to look like a professional against an amateur. That’s what’s going to happen, and Yair is going to be surprised, his coaches are going to be surprised. They’re going be like, ‘oh, I thought this we were going to come between this easy fighter and his big name.’ But we’re going to see. They’re going to see.”
We’ll see what happens soon enough. If Penn can score the upset, then he could jump right into the top ten at 145. In fact, the legend could very well get booked for a bout with a top five ranked contender next. If he loses, however, and does so badly, will Penn continue to fight?
UFC FN 103 will take place in Phoenix, Arizona.
