Following Ronda Rousey’s second straight, stoppage defeat, many have speculated that she’ll hang up the gloves and focus on acting, but Chael Sonnen isn’t sure that can happen.
Rousey made her long awaited return at UFC 207, December 30th, but the star was quickly taken out by new bantamweight champ, Amanda Nunes. As you know, Rousey was fighting for the first time since November, 2015, when she was KO’d by Holly Holm.
All Rousey has reported since her latest defeat, is that she’s taking some time to think about her future. Since Rousey has starred in several movies now, some folks believe she’s going to focus on opportunities in Hollywood, and not the Octagon. Well, recently TMZ Sports spoke with Chael Sonnen, and the Bellator fighter had this to say about the speculation (quotes via MMA Mania):
“I want the best for Ronda, but we’re operating in a level of reality here. These things are all tied together. This girl can’t act, nor should she be able to, she’s not a trained actor,” Sonnen said. “She was in those opportunities because she was very famous. It’s a house of cards. If one goes, they all go.”
“…So, is she a title contender in the future or ever? No, those days are long gone” Sonnen added, after noting the 29 year-old Rousey is in her prime. “However, there is something to be said for being a top 10, going out there mixing it up and seeing where your skills are, drawing tickets, giving the audience what they want. There is something to be said of that.”
Rousey fans might not agree with Sonnen here, but you do have to wonder if she’ll have the same acting opportunities moving forward, if she’s no longer fighting. Although, Gina Carano continues to act in movies, and she hasn’t fought in years. It’s going to be fascinating to see what comes next for “Rowdy”.
