Former lightweight champion Jamie Varner will look to get back in the title hunt when he meets undefeated prospect Kamal Shalorus in the main event of WEC 49 on June 20 at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
World Extreme Cagefighting today officially announced the event’s Versus-televised main card, which also includes Josh Grispi vs. LC Davis, Chris Horodecki vs. Ed Ratcliff, and Mark Hominick vs. Yves Jabouin, which were all previously reported on MMAFrenzy.com.
Varner (16-3) retained the 155-pound title last January with a controversial victory over Donald Cerrone, but lost the belt to interim champ Ben Henderson in January, suffering a third-round submission which snapped a five-fight win streak.
Shalorus (6-0-1) made his WEC debut in November with a first-round TKO of Will Kerr, then remained unbeaten by earning a unanimous decision over Dave Jansen at January’s WEC 46.
