TJ Dillashaw has made it abundantly clear he’s unhappy with the UFC’s decision to hand Cody Garbrandt a title shot, but the former champ doesn’t think the latter’s going to win it on Friday.
Dillashaw lost the 135 title to Dominick Cruz this past January via split decision, and in the proceeding months, he campaigned hard for a rematch. That didn’t happen, of course, as the UFC elected to go with Urijah Faber, and now the hard hitting Garbrandt.
Well, in advance of UFC 207, and Dillashaw’s bout with John Lineker, he appeared on “The MMA Hour”. During the segment Dillashaw was asked to weigh-in on Cruz – Garbrandt, which will serve as the card’s co-headliner. Here is some of what the former Team Alpha Male fighter had to say (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“I think Dominick wins that fight with how smart he’ll fight him,” Dillashaw said. “I think Cody is one-dimensional. He’s a great fighter, he’s fast, he’s powerful. He’s good, don’t get me wrong. Anyone’s got a chance. Anybody can obviously win. But if I had to put money on it, I would bet on Cruz. He’s going to fight him too smart, he’s a veteran, he knows what to do. I think the way Cruz fights is Cody’s biggest weakness. I just don’t think he’s ready yet.”
We shall see soon enough. One could make that argument that Cruz hasn’t fought anyone who has power like Garbrandt, since he laid claim to the WEC title. But, the big question is, will Garbrandt be able to land on one of the most elusive, unorthodox fighters in the game? A guy who can also counter forward pressure with a pretty developed wrestling pedigree?
UFC 207 will be hosted by the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
