Dominick Cruz has talked a tough and confident game leading up to UFC 207, but according to the man he’ll face, the bantamweight champ is already planning for life after fighting…
That man, of course, is the heavy handed Cody Garbrandt, who will face Cruz in the co-headliner on Friday night. For weeks now the bantamweights have tossed verbal shots in each other’s direction. Case in point, Garbrandt has cited Cruz’s job as a commentator and analyst for FOX, as evidence the renowned fighter is on his way out (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“He’s getting ready to relinquish his belt to me,” Garbrandt said. “He’s already getting ready in his mind. He’s like, ‘Hey, I’m setting up a nice career. I’m setting up my next chapter in my life.’ That’s just smart.
“He knows what’s going to happen in this fight. I’ll knock him out, so yes, I’ll give him a rematch because I know he’ll cry and bitch about it. So I’ll give him an immediate rematch right away. And then do the same thing that I did the first fight. And then he’ll be ready for his next chapter in his life.”
Now does Garbrandt really believe that Cruz is eyeing life after fighting, and is ready to transition into commentating full time? Maybe. It could also just be his way of attempting to put doubt in Cruz’s mind. After all, considering Cruz is just 31, and was sidelined for a long time due to knee injuries, it would be surprising if he’s looking to hang up the gloves. Unless, of course, his knees continue to bother him.
UFC 207 will be hosted by the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the headliner, Ronda Rousey will take on bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes.
