A lot of people were surprised when it was recently announced that Germaine de Randamie will face Holly Holm for the UFC’s inaugural, women’s 145 title, including the latter.
There had been reports lately that the UFC was planning to introduce a women’s featherweight division, and that it had offered Cris “Cyborg” a couple of dates for a title fight. But, “Cyborg” reported she turned down the opportunities, since she’s still recovering from her cut to 140 pounds back in September.
Well, the UFC decided to move forward with the championship, and now Holm will face de Randamie at UFC 208, Febraury 11th. The former bantamweight champ recently appeared on “The Luke Thomas Show“, and while doing so, Holm admitted she didn’t see this fight coming (quote via Bloody Elbow):
“It wasn’t the phone call that I thought I was gonna get,” said Holm, “but it’s definitely… I said yes to it right away. My coach actually called, he was out of town, he was on his way out of town, and he called. I was still at the gym and he was like, ‘Hey, 145 lb belt, Germaine de Randamie. I’m not gonna say yes without you, but I think that it’s a go.’ And I always… I go with what he thinks to do. I always just follow his guidance, so I said, ‘Lets do it then.’ He said, ‘I know she’s a bigger 135, she’ll be even stronger at 145, but so will you.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, yep.’”
Holm also added that she expects to face “Cyborg” in the coming months, provided she wins the 145 title. She also reported that she was offered a catchweight bout with “Cyborg” originally, and that they were interested in that. According to Holm, the 145 title wasn’t in the picture, however, until she was offered the bout with de Randamie.
