Although tonight will mark the end of Urijah Faber’s remarkable career, and UFC on FOX 22 will even take place in his hometown of Sacramento, “The California Kid” isn’t headlining. But, the former WEC champ and perennial bantamweight contender seems just fine with that decision.
Faber will take on Brad Pickett at tonight’s event, and a few weeks ago, the Team Alpha Male founder announced it would be his last fight. The 37 year-old is coming off consecutive losses for the first time in his career, as Faber was decisioned by Dominick Cruz and then Jimmie Rivera earlier this year.
Despite the fact Faber is a big name, particularly in Sacramento, his fight with Pickett isn’t headlining. It’s not even the co-main event. Paige VanZant will take on Michelle Waterson in the headliner, and Sage Northcutt – Mickey Gall will serve as the co-headliner.
Recently Faber appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and when asked to comment on the situation, he stated this (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“You have to look at it from a business standpoint,” Faber said. “They [UFC] don’t want to promote someone they’re not going to make any money off, and they’re doing a great job at telling my story and giving me some love on this. But the truth is, Paige VanZant is just 22 years old, Sage Northcutt and Mickey Gall, these are guys that they will hopefully be promoting for the next decade. So it makes sense to get them to the big audience on FOX. That’s a big opportunity for the new fan base to get introduced to the brand new stars, so it makes a lot of sense that they put those guys in the forefront because they’re going to be money makers for the years to come.”
