After dropping his UFC debut to former welterweight champ Matt Hughes at Saturday’s UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi, veteran Renzo Gracie promised he’ll return the UFC and vowed to come back in better shape, though whether he’ll drop to lightweight hasn’t been decided:

It’s so hard to even criticize this guy’s fights. He’s just too nice.
like most Gracies.. and you cant rag on the guy for not puting on a show.. he has tons of heart and he showed it yesterday.. i know i would have quit after taking enough leg kicks to put you in a wheelchair for a week.. im anxious to see who he will fight next and in what weight class.. i think he will have the most success in the lightweight division..
totally inspiring. while it was a conservative fight – there was a lot of excitement about what could have happened given the skill set these 2 guys still bring to the table.
I hope Renzo can follow through on the cardio development as I think he could be a top 10 WW easily. GSP might be just too much of an athlete but the skillset he brings might be an answer to the HnP (hump and ground)
I think Renzo’s biggest issue was more the fact that he was essentially the PR guy for the UFC in this event. His personal relationships in Abu Dhabi were instrumental in the fight coming here. He did so many interviews before this fight that I really think it took away from his training… and that’s not including the fact that he also has his own school to run as well.
I also think that when you consider Renzo’s age and relative MMA inactivity, throwing him to a guy like Matt Hughes was a bit much. Maybe if the guy had been given even a single tune-up fight before stepping in with one of the greatest 170ers ever, he wouldnt’t have gotten roughed up the way he did…
yeah but you know that’s who he wanted haha
So who’s up next to try and slay the newest Gracie killer Matt Hughes, Rickson Gracie?
I’m only half-serious, but remember that Rickson once said with a straight face that he could have defeated Fedor, who has “so-so technical ability”, when he was in his PRIDE prime…
the fight was ok matt seem 2 have a game plan and stuck with it matt diid a great job..win are lose it take heart to step in the cage..
That fight proved to me that Hughes does not have much more in the tank. Gracie looked like he rocked him once or twice but i’ll have to watch the fight again to see. Hughes stand up was terrible as always, and if that was a top 5 ww he most likely would have lost.
Put anyone not named GSP in against a top 5 ww he loses. By your standards, you can have no more than 5-7 people in a weight class.
Did you put thought into that comment?
“Hughes stand up was terrible as always”
Forget putting thought into his post, did he even watch the fight?
6 months and he couldn’t get ready? He needs to retire and grab Matt Hughes and bring him with him. that is reality.
renzo should give it up and stick to teaching because he is a great teacher and inspiration to bjj students everywhere.
But he is not a mma fighter with the guys skill set these days he got out struck by hughes who is on his way out soon and no where close to a decent striker.
Matt Hughes is a UFC legend…i highly doubt he is on his way out. Especially being on a 2 fight win streak. Hes on the decline so they are finding him winnable matches. Hughes should fight swick next
