Following his surprising upset loss to Frankie Edgar at Saturday’s “UFC 112: Invincible,” former lightweight title-holder BJ Penn posted a video on his official website thanking his fans for their support and congratulating Edgar for fighting a “great fight.”
“I want to thank everybody, thank all the fans, thank the trainers, thank my family, and thank everybody who supported me over the years,” Penn said. “I want to congratulate Frankie Edgar. He fought a great fight tonight. Congratulations – he’s the new champ.”

BJ seems humble in this lose… Showing great class… Hope he can get his belt back…
Mma ology, way to go frankie edgar,
Class move by the Prodigy, especially considering a lot of folks will catagorize that decision as bullsh!t…
really you think so?? i defiantly dont agree with the 50 – 45 scoring, but i would say frankie won that fight
I disagree my friend, but not so strongly that I’d try to disrespect Edgar and spoil the night for his supporters, or blast posters in any way.
If BJ wishes the new champ well, how could I, or anyone else, do any less?
i have to agree with cj, i scored the fight 48-47 for Edgar.. i watched the fight 3 times and scored it the same way each time..
I could have sworn up and down last night that Edgar out-struck BJ, but I check fightmetric and it shows BJ with a slight edge in strikes thrown. It also shows that Edgar went 8% in the takedown department, which means that BJ was successful in stopping 92% of the takedowns. BJ looked slow, hungover, whatever, and I think that’s why he lost.

im still in awwww, frankie picked him apart, and that kids gas tank is NUTS!! 5 rounds of being on his toes and looked like he could have gone more
congrats
edgar did great but i dont think he will beat up other lw in the div like bj did. edgar pratically won a a boxing match not a mma fight.
dont know why bj didnt take him to the ground.
Terrible decision. BJ hit him with more and better punches. Nothing at all happened on the ground either way. Did anyone else notice that BJ seemed to be fighting on one leg?
I was wondering about Bj’s knee, i think he is just being polite and not saying that wrap was for something more serious. He didn’t really charge or appear to be very mobile as usual. Either way i’m sure he will be back and can’t wait to see Bj back at it.
Yeah I gotta say I had Frankie winning 4 out of 5 rounds myself. I don’t really see how anyone could see it any other way. *IF* you take the idea that it was a championship fight out of the equation and view it as a fight round by round Frankie just outworked BJ. And I am saying this coming off of like 4 days ago saying BJ was p4p the best there is. I do think it was a good close fight, but BJ looked the worse between them, got hit more, pushed the pace less, and accomplished less in that fight. The only round I gave to BJ was round 1 and that was simply just because it was closest I thought I’d give it to the champ.
Wow this is weird, everyone feel the exact opposite of me. I thought bj won the fight. Yeah he lost gas in that last round but his striking was better. If anything I would have called it a draw, but to beat the champ and take the belt I think it has to clear who won the fight. Hats off to both of them because theyre both great fighters!!
Let me just say this first I’m not a Pen fan boy. i reviewed watched the fights for effective aggression striking grappling/wresling and ring control. Here is how i scored the fight 49-46 Pen.

I had penn winning the first two Rounds and Edgar winning the fifth. The third and fourth rounds were so close that they could have gone either way IMO. I totally thought it was Penn when buffer said 50-45. But I was amazed it was Edgar. I think the judging was fair. I just feel sorry for the next guy who has to fight Penn.
Penn should fight Gray Manard next. Id like to see that fight.
Frankie Edgar faught good but I dont think he did enough to win the title. If that was enough to win the title how in the world does Shogun lost to Machida? That’s unbelivable. BJ, is my dude and I give Edgar credit but he didnt do enought to win the belt in my opinion. BJ will win his next fight and get another title shot.
How does Edgar get this decision, but Shogun clearly beats Machida and loses lmao you got to be kidding me. If Edgar did enough to win that fight Im dead.
So important, you had to say it twice…
Here’s how. Different judges. Not two people will ever see a fight the same way. We’ve proven that enough here on our own.
After the Shogun-Machida fight, Cecil Peoples came out and explained him giving it to Machida. As a judge, he puts less value on single leg kicks (which Shogun threw a lot of) than on combinations to the upper body and head (which Machida threw more of). After that article came out it was clearer why he scored that fight for Machida, though many still disagree.
Obviously in the Edgar-Penn fight it was a different set of judges with a different set of criteria. And many disagree once again, but I dont’ think Penn had any ring control at all. It looked to be Edgar’s plan to move around and in and out, because he was prepared to do so for 25 minutes in the middle of the desert. And Penn never managed to stop him, he just circled with him, trying the same way to stop a guy who was better prepared on that night.
I didn’t give Frankie much of a chance going in so he impressed me, if only his preparation. So often challengers in title fights don’t have the gas tank to go the distance. I was happy to see he went about his prep and his fight plan the right way.
I have heard all the points of view on the fight…from you got to beat the champion decisively, to who out worked who, and who controlled the ring or landed the most power punches. Fact of the matter is, the number DO NOT lie. Check out the fightmetric on the fight, Frankie, though he fought valiantly, lost! For those that don’t believe… go here
http://www.fightmetric.com/fights/Edgar-Penn.html
You have to grade the whole fight…not who was most active. A smart fighter does not play into his adversaries strengths or plan of attack. He sticks to the method that works best for him. And in BJ’s case, it was not to try and run down Frankie and waste a lot of energy, for he would only continue to run anyways, but stick to his game and his great advantage over Frankie in cold calculating power punches. That is why a fighter like GSP is so successful, he fights his opponent in his weakest point. Frankie only landed 9 more body punches and 4 more leg kicks than BJ. Everything else, he was out scored on…he got 1 takedown out of 13 attempts. That’s getting shut down by anybody’s standards.
I know that a lot people got fooled by all that moving around that Frankie did into thinking that he was winning, but it was all for not because he got out scored in all the important aspects of the fight game. You MUST take to account that an MMA fighter is by definition a “complete” fighter, in as such, that it’s not only about throwing the hands but the takedown and takedown defense, the submission and submission defense….ground and pound, which is something that Frankie never got to do because their was no way the he could keep BJ down.
I congratulate Frankie for the win, even though it was the horrible judging that gave it to him, but in the end it boils down to that the “Best Fighter” did not win. I only pray that I never get stuck with such poor judging in any of my fights. BJ deserved the win…but hey, the rematch is going to make the UFC organization a killing now wont it. Maybe then the best fighter will actually win.
go to fightmetrics.com and look at the stats there.. BJ won that fight I think based on the power punches.. Frankie stuck and move the whole time. BJ should have taken him down.
Go to compustrike.com and look at the stats there…Frankie won that fight.
Even the stat sites disagree.
